Fernox TF1 Total Filter 22mm is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly recommended product Added a filter to my Central heating system after I replaced the circulating pump. The old pump had significant amounts of debris inside it. Fitting the filter was very easy. It took less than 20 minutes. After re-filling the central heating system and bleeding out the air I ran the system for 10 minutes. I then closed the isolating valves of the filter and removed the top cover to inspect the filter chamber. I was amazed at the amount of debris that had been trapped in such a short time. After cleaning the filter I added Fernox F1 to the chamber, replace the top, bled out the air and re-opened the isolating valves. I checked the filter again the following day and removed a similar quantity of debris. I will probably check the filter monthly over the winter. Overall I am very impressed with its effectiveness and ease of use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from TF1 filter Easy to install and easy isolate and clean. In my view it should be sold with either a cleaner and or inhibitor for extra value for money. Another point is the compact is cheaper but only available next day which isn't helpful if you're already in store

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Older versions Leak I have just replaced a TF1 which was leaking from the lid, manifold joint and compression fittings onto my customers utility ceiling. The filter was installed at 90 degrees to the pipe work meaning the manifold had to be slightly undone on a thread to allow for the fitting to sit at 90 degrees to the pipe which caused seals to fail over time. In addition the compression fittings require rubber washers which had also failed. The lid shouldn't need to be undone for servicing so can only assume the seals have again hardened and failed. The replacement TF1 has been upgraded to sort the thread issue between the main body and manifold although the rubber seals on the compression fittings still feel cheap. The lid on the replacement model now also includes visual alignment marks to ensure it is sufficiently tightened. The fact that the new design has been improved is a good thing but also should be a warning to anyone who has had the older version fitted which should be checked for leaks when servicing boilers. Time will tell if the new improvements work?

Rated 2 out of 5 by from TF1 Poor Reliability & Design The design is flawed - read on..... I have this fitted for about three years and yes reasonably easy to fit and yes it does remove some muck, but if your system is almost new and well flushed this is just playing safe. However, I started to note a leak in more than one place. If fitting vertically the original design was ready to fit. However, if you place say in the horizontal position or change of direction of flow you have to take out the rubber seal from the main body parts that connect to the pipe and refit with thicker seals / spacers to allow for variation in input/output ports and the main body. This is because this screws onto the main body so depending on the position there will be gap differences, hence the difference seals/spacers - this is poor design. This all well seems well and good to begin with but over time seals shrink (plastics age harden) which means which once sealed doesn't and needed tighten further so more at a 45 degrees rather than vertical, so yes it will leak over time, perhaps if I had known this I should have used some addition sealant (plumbers gold), which would have prevented the leak through the ceiling and the subsequent damage. Additionally, the inlet an outlet vales fit to the copper pipe with rubber seals not compression fittings, hence again over time, these can perish but you would have thought should have been OK after 3 years. OK perhaps fitting additional sealant may have helped, but there just no substitute for good quality compression fittings. As a result I have removed, even if I replaced the seals this would just again happened again over time and I have replaced it with a more substantial all brass device with compression fittings, similar to that fitted by the gas board. Wish I knew this at the time as it has cost me almost twice as much and damage to the ceilings. These things should be fit and forgot apart for say a yearly flush of the containments inside the main body. Don’t be swayed by well-known manufactures as they have to redesign and learn by mistakes. I note a similar issue has also been noted in another thread. I guess now I am faced with trying to bring it to the Manufacturers attention but I guess they won’t entertain so I have just wasted my money. I would advise a different make instead - dont waste your time any money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fit and forget This unit has had many years of development and has now become so easy to fit it's almost childs play. Find a convenient place on your pipework (usually the return), ensuring you have clearance above and below the unit for servicing, cut out the appropriate section of pipe with a pipeslice (approx 7 inches), fit the two compression butterfly valves and then plop the TF1 between the two valves with the rubber washers and nip them up lightly. Job done!! The TF1 can easily be adjusted to accommodate flow up or down, left or right. Servicing the unit: turn off boiler, close butterfly valves, remove the magnet rod from the top of the TF1 (this lets the collected magnetite fall to the bottom of the unit) place bucket under the TF1 then open the drain off valve (with the supplied key/cap combo) at the bottom of the TF1. The trapped gunge will drop into the bucket that you put underneath, then open the butterfly valve on the flow into the unit briefly to swill out the TF1 and any remaining sludge. Close butterfly valve, drain off valve and reinstall the magnet into the top of the TF1. Job done :) The beauty of this unit is that you don't come into contact with any sludge like you do with a Magnaclean et al, it's easy to install with top quality fittings, and can be configured to work with any run of pipework. Won't install anything else. Hope this helps Ruski

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Leaky leaky leaky It leaked soone after install and soaked the b carpet and chipboard flooring. I fixed it by tightening top cover. Later the boiler needed fixing and this device had to be removed. British Gas engineer didn't even bother trying to refit it and installed his own solid brass one instead. He says they always ALWAYS leak and he couldn't be asked to fiddle with it or risk water damage after he left. That was his experience of the device...
