Rated 5 out of 5 by from does the job I bought an expensive heavy duty metal battery charger about 12 years anyway this winter it decided to bite the big one. Nipped into my local screwfix this was on offer so i bought it fully intending to replace it with another metal sealey charger to be honest this one does the job perfectly well so i'm sticking with it for a while, i'm not sure it will do the 12 years my sealey did but who knows so far so good

Rated 4 out of 5 by from All charged up! Having bought a 30 year old hobby car, I decided I need a reliable charger as despite the battery being fairly new it was indicating that it needed recharging, the previous owner having driven infrequently. This charger appealed because it was a 'smart' charger and would turn itself off when done, and had the idiot proof wrong connection fail safe built in. So, out of the box it appears solid and has useful side pockets for mains lead and connector storage. The instructions were fairly clear but I noted that there was an addendum sheet that advised not following the original instructions and to clamp the earth (black) lead to a metal part of the car chassis. Presumably this is a bit of 'Elf n Safety' backside covering and to avoid messing up all the modern car electrics and on board computers! Anyway, I decide to use the slow charge setting overnight (read somewhere that repeated fast charging soon does car batteries in) and set up as amended instructions said. I noticed the red charge light didn't come on but assumed that was because the battery was completely flat. Next day, found the battery still dead and no green light on at the charger so read through more reviews on here, noting what people had said about disconnecting and setting up 2 or 3 times and it then worked okay. No matter what I did the power light wouldn't come on with the earth lead connected up to the car chassis, so went old school and connected both leads direct to the car battery terminals. That resulted in the orange charge light only illuminating, until i turned the mains on when the power light also came on. Now very annoyed, I left the charger going overnight again and went to fire off an email to Ring, anticipating that the charger was faulty and would have to take it back to Screwfix next day. Below is the reply I received from Ring, for reference- " If it is below 6V ish the charger won't recognise it as being connected so it will not start charging. If you have a voltmeter, you could check the terminal voltage. If it is low we usually suggest you connect it to a known good battery for 15 minutes to get the terminal voltage high enough for the charger to 'see' it. Or run jump leads to another car for 15 minutes or so to achieve the same effect. " So, I found the battery now charged and can only assume that the orange light only thing, without mains power must be something to do with residual power in the charger flowing to the directly connected battery. In conclusion, my summary is thus- a) Good charger, but if your battery is completely dead it isn't the product you want. Find a willing mate with a car and some jump leads, or a Jumper power pack instead. b) Try and park so's another car can get alongside to help jump start, or reverse into your garage at night. At least then you'll still be able to run an extension lead to the car if you do want to connect a charger. c) Despite Ring's advice, connecting the earth lead to the car body doesn't work if the car battery is remotely flat. You'd probably need to disconnect the battery altogether (having checked for any radio codes and resetting instructions first) and then connect the charger leads directly to battery terminals. d) If all else fails, you probably need a new battery and not this smart charger.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from charger great bit of kit. Worked perfectly and easy to use. Compact too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Battery problems this winter. I bought the battery charger to prevent any possible problems arising from low car use this winter. I have a gel battery that calls for a particular type of charger. My local service garage recommended the Ring RCB208. It is easy to use.
