Standalone Photocell is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 103.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Has a limited life in use It does what is supposed to do. The only down side is you will be buying a replacement ever three to four years. The opaque doom eventual turns yellow in the sunlight and you will find that your lights stay on as it can’t see the sunlight. Easy to replace due to the bayonet connector to enable you to replace it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Garden Photocell This has to be the best controller for mains supply garden lighting. Fitted in the correct location, the guide is excellent, the garden lighting is controlled from dawn to dusk, rmoving the necessity to manually switch the power on and off. The garden lighting provide not only security with well lit areas but also essential lighting for young and old alike. The unit also controlls cost and is certainly a boon for those on a tight budget. Five stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile replacement sensor Bought this to replace similar item over 20 years old. The description suggests it may not work with LED lights - there is no reason why this should be so as it contains a contactor. We use it with LED porch lights and it works perfectly well. The sensor triggers after a delay (to accomodate transient light changes) and it is consistent on and off. The sensor head fits a standard 3 pole socket, so it is a direct replacement. However the supplied socket includes a cork seal to prevent water entering the top, and an open drain hole at the bottom (through which the wires enter). This arrangement complies with IP44 and if the hole at the bottom was obstructed (with a grommet for example) it would not comply. The 3 pole arrangement only permits a live switched feed when it is dark, although the electronics seem capable of switching the other way, the output is permanently wired to nc (opens during daylight) and the sensor is sealed. In addition to the LED bulbs, the unit is also wired in series with a timer. There is no problem with the device being switched off twice daily. Some alternatives to this device also contain a timer, but in these, the time is counted from when the device triggers, and not at a certain time of day. In addition, the all-in-one devices I investigated specifically would not work with LED lights. The expected life of these devices is 10 years, but the previous one lasted 20. That represents excellent value at 1p per week. Fully recommended. Regarding converting the n/c function to n/o or 2 way, you would need a "DIN relay socket" and "power relay 240Vac", located in the consumer unit. If you search on those two terms you will find a number of potential suppliers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saves money on bills and bulbs I bought this in order to turn off an outside light which my wife insists be left on at night as a deterrent, problem is that she doesn't turn the light off during the day which was costing money in terms of electricity and the cost of bulbs which were constantly blowing due to continuous use. I researched what I needed to build the photocell circuit and was able to buy most of what I needed from screwfix. I ordered online for click and collect and thankfully everything was in my local branch. The photocell was well packaged with clear instructions. It was relatively easy to install with some preparation of the circuitry wiring done before I climbed a ladder. TOP TIP: Don't try to wire this in when at the top of a ladder, there are too many bits that you will need to keep hold of to make it easy. The fact that you can use compression fixings with this also makes weatherproofing it simple.
