Irwin Record 2" Smoothing Plane is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 46.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Plane sailing This 2" Irwin plane, while being mid-priced is of a solid construction; unlike some other planes the settings for the blade are both easily controlled and solid when set into place. Overall a good purchase for a professional or a DIY'er.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Plane & Simple Woodwork is a main leisure activity for me. I never really got on well with hand planes in the past, preferring electric planers instead. This Record plane is a good hand tool, I was pleasantly surprised. For the price I have no complaints. For the average DIYer this will be more than adequate for most tasks. The cast iron body is well made & machined with a good weight to it. The blade is of good quality steel & the blade depth adjuster & lateral adjustment lever work fine. The frog on this model has no adjustment screw like the Stanley planes, but you can square it up with the mouth if needed & move it no more than 2mm forwards to reduce the mouth size. Being able to centralise the frog is essential in setting up & is easy with just 2 screws to slacken. If working mostly with softwoods, the size of the mouth is fine. The plane functioned fine after the blade was sharpened, but spend a couple of hours fettling it & it will perform altogether smoother & produce better work as a result. The best YouTube video I have seen for an in depth guide to planes is Paul Sellers 'Restoring a bench plane'. Although you won't have to deal with rust, the other steps he takes you through will pay dividends. Just flattening the sole plate with 120grit abrasive (with blade installed but retracted) took about 15 minutes & made a huge difference. Substitute 240, 600 & 1200 grit wet & dry paper on a flat surface if you don't have a set of diamond stones for flattening & sharpening the blade. My plane required a little bit of work but generally it was machined well. Green polishing compound on leather also makes a massive difference to the sharpness of the blade. I use the palm of a rigger glove but any leather seems to work ok. One feature I really like is the brass screw for securing the cap iron, it is simple but effective. The only thing I don't like about the plane, as others have mentioned, is the small rear handle. I have average size hands. not large & I found it uncomfortable. Luckily I had a spare handle from an old defunct plane that fitted & it is much more comfortable. Overall I like this plane & the time taken to set it up properly was worth it. I will still be using my electric one for trimming underneath doors though!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hot knife through butter Great planer, feels solid and well made, easy to adjust and use. Have previously used other hand planes and never got on with them, they seem to jump and gouge the wood. However this plane is nothing like I've used before. Definitely recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very good plane I purchased this to replace another smoothing plane (Stanley) that had got rusty as had been buried in the garage for ages. Despite coming in a blister pack, the plane was very well made. All the components were of durable quality as long as you look after them and use the plane corretly. I honed the blade before using and set up the cutting face etc and it worked perfectly. Very easy to adjust in operation and acheive the finish needed. I'm a DIYer and the plane suits me and my jobs nicely. It is NOT stored in the garage like the other one, I want to keep this working!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product Since leaving school (many yrs ago) I’ve hardly ever used one. I don’t normally have the need to plane wood and if I have I have always used an electric one but can never get a good finish like the manual style. I’m reconverted now. Very pleased with this product.
