Makita HP1631K/2 710W Percussion Drill 240V is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from does not cope with slow speeds using a 25mm auger bit at the required slow speed the drill overheated and emitted smoke. Like all drill manufacturers the gearing provides an unwanted high speed and no where near good enough for low speeds. I will revert to a make that provides a speed dial on the top which gave far better low speed control.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from FIRST CLASS corded drill Used plenty of battery drills before, but this is the best corded drill have had for a long time. After registration confirmed 3 year warranty. Proves you get what you pay for.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not the usual Makita quality Within weeks of ownership the chuck would jam and not release, but when using percussion setting it would undo and no matter how tight it was done up it would release. Additionally, it overheated in percussion mode flinging the melted grease from the nose bearing. I've had Makita in the past (still have), but this must be the black sheep of the family.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from OK, but basic OK drill - doesn't centre well. Chuck is cheap and not durable. Cable length is terrible - you'll need an extension lead for any job - other than drilling a hole next to a socket!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Purchase Purchased recently. But outstanding performance in difficult situations. Comfortable to use. Sensible weight and balance. Easy to use lockable chuck. Pleasure to use

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Fatally flawed chuck The Makita brand and the, featured, more positive reviews persuaded me to 'buy blind'. Looking back, I noticed, too late, that others had also spotted the poor chuck arrangement. Sadly, the chuck design is fatally flawed, in that whatever depth you might want to drill into, the chuck only grips with the drill pushed right into the chuck. If that only leaves, say, 30mm protruding, that's all you can ever go with that bit. Fantastic on paper, useless in reality, what a pity.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great drill A very powerful little drill that will drill masonry no problem. We used it with a 16mm spade bit to drill through double 175mm wooden gate posts.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Rubbish chuck design I used the drill for only 2 days before taking it back with a failed chuck. I was drilling 5mm pilot holes through 25mm battens. The instructions said to insert the drill bit all the way into the chuck, but my 5mm masonry bit showed less than 25mm of drill protruding. If I inserted the bit so that I could show enough of the bit to pass through the 25mm batten the chuck would not hold it firmly enough to keep it in place and after a couple of holes it was back to showing less than 25mm. Then I got onto the main 8mm holes for the plugs. This time I could insert the drill to the base of the chuck, but was unable to tighten the chuck enough to stop the bit slipping. Worse than that, when I tried to undo the chuck it had progressively tightened in use and had to resort to a pair of plumbing spanners to undo it. I will stress that I only tightened the chuck by hand. When undone the chuck had damaged the shaft of a new drill bit and the resulting 'burr' became locked into a hexagon recess at the base of the chuck and I had to resort to a vice and pair of pliers to remove the bit from the open teeth of the chuck. Fortunately I was able to take the drill back and get a refund, so please do not make the same mistake as I made. This chuck is badly designed. Makita really need to go back to the drawing board.
